Halloween in the Cotswolds 2026: Events, Pumpkin Patches and What's On
October half term in the Cotswolds means a solid two weeks of things actually worth getting in the car for. Pumpkin patches that range from a simple pick-and-go field to full evenings with fire shows and live music. Castle grounds transformed after dark. A zombie hunt inside a decommissioned prison. Ghost walks through Roman streets. And at least one Victorian mansion that is, by most accounts, legitimately unsettling to spend time in.
Most farm park evening sessions and scare events sell out well in advance. Book online before you go.
Pumpkin Patches in the Cotswolds 2026
Cotswold Farm Park near Guiting Power
The Farm Park's pumpkin patch is the best-established in the area. It opens Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2nd October, then daily through half term to 31st October 2026. Dogs welcome. The daytime patch includes pick your own, carving sessions and face painting. A free pumpkin token is included with full farm park admission.
On Saturday nights from 11th October, the patch stays open late for Pumpkin Nights: a woodland pumpkin trail lit after dark, live music, food trucks and a bar. It works well if you want a family outing that does not have to end at 4pm.
Practical: Saturday evenings sell out — book online. The address is near Guiting Power, GL54 5UG. The postcode sits about 2 miles from the entrance; follow the brown tourist signs.
Over Farm near Gloucester: Spookyard and Pumpkins After Dark
Over Farm runs two distinct things in October and they suit different moods. Spookyard (24th October to 1st November 2026) is the daytime half-term festival: live witch shows, a Monster Mash-Up Disco, a spooky woodland walk, a maize maze, tractor rides, quad train and full farm park access. The 2026 shows are brand new. Firmly for families with younger children.
Pumpkins After Dark is the evening version: fire shows, live music, spooky tractor rides and night-time pumpkin picking. Better suited to older children and adults who want the atmosphere without the daytime noise. If you are planning to do both in one day, Over Farm's own advice is to leave around 4pm and grab food nearby before the evening session.
Practical: daytime PYO last entry at 4pm. Wheelchair-accessible pumpkin walkthrough on site. Dogs on short leads welcome, £1 charge at the gate.
Primrose Vale Farm Shop, south of Cheltenham
Primrose Vale runs two age-differentiated Halloween trails across the farm, confirmed to return for 2026. One is designed for pre-school children, one for older kids. Both involve tasks, puzzles and challenges around the farm with a prize at the end. PYO pumpkins available separately. Pre-booking recommended; walk-ins accepted if space allows, with a £1 per person surcharge.
Family Halloween Events in the Cotswolds 2026
Sudeley Castle Pumpkin Trail and Halloween Events, Winchcombe
Sudeley runs a pumpkin trail across its grounds from 25th October to 2nd November 2026. Trail maps, hidden pumpkins across the Queen's Garden and Tithe Barn, witches marks to find, and a Halloween treat for anyone who completes it. Fancy dress encouraged. The large timber play fort stays open throughout.
On 31st October, Tudor Halloween runs inside the castle walls and Phantoms and Fireworks takes over after dark: haunted trail, Ghoul Skool Disco, trick or treat at the castle door, walkabout characters, fireworks and food. Gates open 6:30pm, event closes 8:30pm. Tickets: £17.50 adults, £12.50 children aged 3 to 15, under-3s free, or £50 for a family of two adults and two children.
If you want one event that covers everything for mixed ages, Sudeley tends to be the answer. The castle grounds are worth visiting in October for their own reasons. Worth checking the Sudeley Castle website for Phantoms and Fireworks booking — it sells out.
Fairytale Farm Halloween Events near Chipping Norton
Fairytale Farm's Scarily Ever After (25 Oct to 2 Nov 2026) suits younger children rather than the farm park crowd: fairy-tale themed, pumpkin carving and craft sessions, a trail and a Bumbling Wizard character. Weekend Illuminated Evenings through October and into November add a lights element after dark — a good option for children who respond better to magical than to spooky.
The Wilson Art Gallery Halloween Trail, Cheltenham
Free-to-enter option for families who want something indoors. The Wilson runs a Halloween trail through its galleries over half term, with a Family Halloween Party on 31st October. Good for a rainy day or a lower-budget outing. Check the Wilson's events page for 2026 dates, usually 25 Oct to 2 Nov.
Halloween at Berkeley Castle
The Halloween event at Berkeley Castle runs from Sunday 25th to Wednesday 28th October 2026: owls in the Great Hall, spooky storytelling and a visit to the Old Wise Woman in the castle cellar. More atmospheric than spectacular — the 12th-century setting does most of the work. Better for older children or families who prefer history to carnival.
South Cerney Halloween Fireworks Spooktacular, 31 October
A Halloween-themed fireworks evening at South Cerney Airfield, south of Cirencester. Children's singalong fireworks display earlier in the evening, then the main show with a bonfire, fireworks choreographed to music and an immersive light show. Costume competition, fairground rides, monster truck rides, food and drink throughout. Tickets £15 adults, £12.50 under-16s, under-3s free, parking £5. Book in advance.
Ghost Walks in the Cotswolds
Bloody Bourton Walking Tours, Bourton-on-the-Water
This is the ghost walk in the area that gets the best write-ups. Edward Charnel leads two-hour tours through Bourton-on-the-Water on Friday and Saturday evenings, dressed in Victorian costume and working from an encyclopaedic knowledge of the village's darker history. Two thousand years of Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and later history — crime, witchcraft, murder, hauntings — filtered through someone who has clearly spent a long time thinking about how to tell it.
The village after dark, emptied of daytime visitors, has a completely different quality to it. Tickets around £8 per person, available from Bourton-on-the-Water Tourist Information or by calling 07954 182016. Runs year-round, so not Halloween-exclusive — but worth booking for a late October evening.
Cotswolds Ghost Tours: Prestbury and Cheltenham
Cotswolds Ghost Tours runs guided evening walks in Cheltenham and in Prestbury, the village just outside Cheltenham with a well-established reputation as one of the most haunted in England. Prestbury's most famous ghost is the Black Abbot, reported regularly in the church and churchyard, along with the Headless Horseman and others. The Cheltenham tour covers the town's own ghostly history. Good for adults and confident older children. Tours run year-round with Halloween-period dates available.

Salvation Z Scare Event at Gloucester Prison
Salvation Z returns to HMP Gloucester in 2026 with a complete revamp: more mazes, more monsters, new plot, new scares. Inside a former prison that closed in 2013 and has its own atmosphere without any theatrical help. The experience involves being chased through four acres of abandoned prison buildings by people in film-grade zombie makeup. Two ticket types: standard and VIP Total Bedlam. Wearing a white t-shirt signals to the actors that you are open to a more targeted experience.

Woodchester Mansion Ghost Hunts near Stroud
Woodchester Mansion is an unfinished Victorian Gothic mansion near Stroud, abandoned mid-construction in the 1870s. Several paranormal events companies run overnight events here throughout October — Haunting Nights and Haunted Happenings both have regular dates, typically 9pm to 3am. The format involves several hours inside the building and its cellars with ghost-hunting equipment.
Adults only (18+). Bring warm layers and sensible footwear. The mansion has no heating. Parking on site via a private road from the village of Nympsfield — the access track is not suitable for low-profile cars.

Under 5s
Primrose Vale's pre-school trail is probably the most age-calibrated option in the area — tasks designed specifically for very young children, not a scaled-down version of adult events. Cotswold Farm Park is accessible and low-pressure. Fairytale Farm near Chipping Norton is the best choice if yours respond better to fairy tales than anything Halloween-adjacent. Avoid after-dark events with this age group.
Ages 5 to 10
The sweet spot for most of the main events. Sudeley Castle's pumpkin trail is well-calibrated for this group: long enough to be satisfying, and the trail requires actual hunting rather than walking past things. Phantoms and Fireworks on 31st October is one of the better family evening events in the region. Over Farm's Spookyard daytime festival is another strong option, particularly for children who enjoy live shows and silly competitions.
Ages 10 to 13
Outgrowing the farm parks but not ready for Salvation Z. Berkeley Castle's Halloween event has more atmosphere. Oxford Castle and Prison (about 40 minutes from the eastern Cotswolds) runs Ghost Fest with spooky tours from age 12 during half term. The Bloody Bourton ghost walk is appropriate for this age group and tends to go down well — it is more history than horror.
Teenagers
Salvation Z is the obvious choice for anyone who wants something that actually frightens them. Check the age recommendation when booking — it is 14 and over. Woodchester Mansion ghost hunts are 18 and over but worth noting for older teenagers with accompanying adults. The Prestbury ghost walk is another option — the village's reputation is taken seriously enough to make for a more interesting evening than most purpose-built scare attractions.

What to combine: Sudeley Castle and South Cerney Airfield are both easy day trips from the Cheltenham area. The Bloody Bourton ghost walk is a natural evening end to a day in Bourton-on-the-Water.
Weather: October in the Cotswolds is unpredictable. The farm events are largely outdoors. Layers, a waterproof and wellies cover most situations — most venues have factored mud into the experience.
