Christmas in the Cotswolds: The Complete Guide 2026
The Cotswolds in December looks exactly like people hope it will. Frost on the fields, lights strung between old stone buildings, a pub fire you can justify stopping at before midday. The reputation is earned. But the region is large, events are spread across different weekends, and a poorly planned day trip can mean three hours of motorway, one full car park, and a mulled wine that cost £7. This guide covers what is actually worth your time, and when.

Christmas markets and fairs
The Cotswolds has markets at most scales, from Cheltenham's multi-week city event to single-day village affairs with 80 stalls and a mince pie competition. The short version: Broadway and Chipping Campden do the best village markets. Moreton-in-Marsh does one big day on 28 November worth planning around specifically. Christmas light trails and switch-ons
Blenheim Palace Illuminated Light Trail (13 November to 20 December 2026) is the largest. An hour-long walk through the palace grounds with large-scale installations, laser displays, and choreographed lighting. The palace also runs a Christmas market with over 70 traders in the Great Court during the same period. Ticketed, books up well in advance. Do not leave it late.
Sudeley Castle Spectacle of Light (20 November to 30 December 2026) is more intimate. The castle setting does most of the work. This year's theme is Alice in Wonderland. Food and drink stalls on the Castle Terrace. Evening only. Now in its eleventh year.
Westonbirt Arboretum Christmas at Westonbirt (27 November to 31 December 2026) is the one most people overlook. Not a palace or castle. A working arboretum, and the trees lit in winter look extraordinary. Dog-friendly. Less crowded than the palace events and worth it for exactly that reason.
Cotswold Farm Park Enchanted Light Trail combines animals with illuminations and is particularly good for younger children. Dates vary year to year. Check from October.
Village light switch-ons happen across the region throughout November. Broadway's lights go on 14 November 2026. Moreton-in-Marsh combines its switch-on with the Christmas market on 28 November. Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Campden, and Burford all have their own switch-on evenings. Check individual village websites from October for confirmed times.
Ice skating
Cheltenham Ice Rink returns to Imperial Gardens from 21 November 2026 through 4 January 2027, closed Christmas Day. A covered, real-ice rink in the town centre. Sessions last an hour. Tickets from around £13 adults, £11.25 children. Skate aids available for under-14s. Book ahead for weekends.
Gloucester Quays ice rink runs alongside the outdoor Christmas market from late November through early January. The docks setting is atmospheric on a clear evening.
Cotswold Water Park runs the Gateway Ice Rink from November through January. Sessions from around £5, which makes it the most affordable option in the region.
Christmas shopping
Stow-on-the-Wold has a concentrated mix of antique dealers, interiors shops, and independent food and drink specialists. The market square is at its best on event weekends in December. Easy to spend two or three hours in without trying.
Burford does this particularly well. A long High Street of genuinely independent shops including antiques, jewellery, booksellers, and clothing, plus the Burford Garden Company, which merits its own trip. Far more than a garden centre: a large homeware and gift emporium with a strong Christmas decorations range, an art gallery, and a good cafe. Plan two hours minimum.
Broadway has the late-night shopping evenings in late November and early December, with shops open until 8:30pm, street entertainers, stalls, and live music along the High Street. Confirmed dates for 2026: 27 November and 4 December. The most atmospheric Christmas shopping in the region.
Chipping Campden has England's longest medieval high street and a strong mix of independent shops. Worth combining with the Christmas market on the first Saturday of December.
Daylesford Organic Farm Shop near Kingham is not cheap. But the food hall, Christmas hamper range, homeware section, and beautifully packaged seasonal produce are in a different category from anything else in the region. The cafe is excellent. If you are buying gifts for people who are hard to impress, this is where to go.
Garden centres at Christmas
Burford Garden Company goes all-in at Christmas. The decorations range is extensive and well-edited, the homeware section is strong, and the cafe is a good reason to linger.
Daylesford has a plant and garden section alongside the farm shop with a proper Christmas range. The whole site is dog-friendly. They also run wreath-making workshops through November and December.
Festive afternoon tea
The Lygon Arms in Broadway does afternoon tea in the historic Great Hall from late November, at around £42 per person. On Sunday 14 December there is a Christmas Carol Afternoon Tea with live performances in the Great Hall. Book this one well ahead.
Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden offers afternoon tea in their spa hotel setting throughout December, which suits a day that combines it with spa time.
The Greenway Hotel near Cheltenham runs festive afternoon tea throughout December at £35 per person, Monday to Sunday, 12 to 4:30pm.
The Swan at Swinbrook and The King's Head Inn at Bledington both offer a more relaxed pub version with open fires. Worth knowing if the hotel setting feels too formal for the occasion.
Where to Stay in Broadway
Cosy pubs
Winter is the best time to properly appreciate a Cotswolds pub. The crowds thin from November, the fires go on, and a long lunch that would have felt hurried in August becomes the entire point of the day.
The Porch House in Stow-on-the-Wold is England's oldest inn. The interior earns its reputation on a winter visit. Two open fires, good food, reliable service.
The Feathered Nest at Nether Westcote is worth the journey. Exceptional food, a proper fire in the bar, views across the valley in daylight. Book the table well in advance.
The King's Head Inn at Bledington is the Good Pub Guide's consistent pick for the area. On the village green, flagstone floors, oak beams, a menu that takes seasonal cooking seriously.
The Bull at Charlbury is the slightly hipper option. Candlelit, open fires, and a kitchen run by the team behind The Pelican in Notting Hill. Still feels right for December.
One practical point: a remote pub on a dark December night with narrow lanes back to wherever you are staying needs more planning than a summer lunch. Know how you are getting home before you order the second bottle.
Festive workshops and crafts
Wreath making is the most popular. Daylesford runs workshops through November and December. The Lygon Arms hosts wreath-making sessions in Broadway in the run-up to Christmas. Corky and Prince run sessions in the vaulted hall at Burford Church, around £75 per person with a glass of fizz included. Booking essential. New Brewery Arts in Cirencester runs bauble-making and seasonal craft workshops throughout December.
Carol concerts and church services
Gloucester Cathedral runs multiple carol services throughout December including free Carols on the Hour sessions on specific Saturdays, family carol services on 23 and 24 December, and evening services with the cathedral choir on 21, 22, and 23 December. No tickets required for most. Arrive early for the popular evening ones.
Tewkesbury Abbey has exceptional acoustics and runs a carol service on 21 December at 6pm. Open to all. Worth the journey specifically for the building.
Cirencester Parish Church and Chipping Campden Church both run candlelit carol services in December. Check parish websites from November for confirmed dates.
Spa breaks
Cotswold House Hotel and Spa in Chipping Campden runs midweek breaks and weekend packages through November and December. Boutique rather than resort-scale, which suits people who prefer quiet over spectacle.
Dormy House near Broadway is one of the stronger spa properties in the region. The Farncombe Estate setting, good food, and a well-equipped spa make it a reliable option for a December weekend.
Barnsley House near Cirencester is a 17th-century property with a garden spa. Smaller and more intimate than the large hotel spas. The grounds are particularly good in winter. Worth confirming current packages before booking.

Cotswold Farm Park Christmas Experience is the most comprehensive family option in the region. A personalised Santa visit, teddy-making workshop, gingerbread decorating, marshmallow toasting, and the farm's play areas. Dates and booking open in October. Do not leave it until December.
Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Santa Express runs from Cheltenham Racecourse on selected dates from late November through 23 December 2026. Santa visits the carriages on the train. The destination is Broadway, worth walking around on arrival. Sessions sell out every year. Book when dates open in October.
Cotswold Reindeer Herd at Ampney Crucis, near Bourton-on-the-Water, opens from mid-November through Christmas. Meet and feed the reindeer, Santa's grotto, Mrs Claus' Tea Rooms. Dates and booking from October.
National Trust properties running family Christmas programmes include Lacock Abbey, with bookable Mother Christmas storytelling sessions, and Dyrham Park, with family trails and a Christmas through the ages theme. Free for NT members.
Pantomimes
Chipping Norton Theatre runs The Snow Queen from November 2026 through January 2027. The Barn Theatre in Cirencester has A Christmas Carol confirmed for 2026. The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham runs Cinderella. The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury and The Sub Rooms in Stroud both run December pantomimes with smaller venues and more affordable tickets.
For adults
A suggested shape for a December weekend: arrive Friday afternoon, check into somewhere in Broadway or Stow-on-the-Wold. Walk the high street as the lights come on. Saturday morning: market or shopping. Saturday evening: light trail at Sudeley or Blenheim. Sunday: long pub lunch, home before dark.
The villages are at their best in the week before Christmas. Quieter than the event weekends, lights fully up, shops well-stocked. A midweek trip in mid-December is the version most people who live nearby prefer.

Self-catering cottages work well for groups or families. No fixed meal times, dogs welcome at many properties, and the option to do your own Christmas dinner in a proper kitchen. Availability over Christmas week is limited. Book by September at the latest.
When to visit
Mid-November: lights begin to switch on, most events open, not yet at peak busy.
Last Saturday of November: Moreton-in-Marsh market and light switch-on (28 November 2026). Worth building a day around.
Late November to first week of December: Broadway late-night shopping, most village markets underway, light trails fully open. The sweet spot before it gets crowded.
First two weekends of December: the busiest period. Car parks in popular villages fill by 10am on Saturdays. Arrive early or park outside and walk in.
Weekdays in December: noticeably quieter. A Tuesday or Wednesday in mid-December is a different experience from a Saturday.
Does it snow? Rarely reliably. Frost is common on higher ground. The villages look good in winter regardless, and the frost on a clear morning is often better than snow anyway.
Practical information
Getting there: most events have parking but it fills fast on busy days. Blenheim and Sudeley both have dedicated event car parks. Book ahead for evening sessions. Cheltenham has a park and ride from Arle Court, just off the M5 at Junction 11, and from Cheltenham Racecourse, both with direct bus links into the town centre.
By public transport: Moreton-in-Marsh has direct train services from London Paddington, Oxford, and Cheltenham. Broadway is reachable by bus from Cheltenham and Evesham. The Steam Railway runs from Cheltenham Racecourse. For light trails and smaller village events, a car is the more realistic option.
What to wear: light trails are 45 to 60 minutes outside in the dark in December. Waterproof shoes, proper layers, and something warm to drink from a flask are not overreactions.
